The 300-pound sphinx was one of 21 sphinxes used in the silent movie The Ten Commandments. Filmed on location in Egypt, Mount Sinai and the Sinai Peninsula, The Ten Commandments was DeMille's most successful work, his first widescreen film, his fourth biblical production, and his final directorial effort before his death in 1959. Concurrently, Berlin’s reputation as a producer continued to grow, and he helmed sessions for acts ranging from Faith No More to Dave Alvin to the Tail Gators. As it turns out, the sphinx was actually a prop from a movie set that’s now nearly a century old. DeMille built an epic Egyptian dreamscape on California’s Central Coast for the silent black-and-white movie The Ten Commandments.
